The Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes is non-profit organization established in 1983 under the auspices of the Council of Maritime Premiers. The Institute arose in response to a need identified by leading genealogists, genealogical societies of the Maritime provinces, and archivists for certification and registration of persons undertaking genealogical research for the public.
In addition, the Institute has a role in upgrading the quality of professional family history research in the Maritimes. Members of the Institute strive for excellence in research and encourage others to do the same. An endeavour is made to raise the profile of professional genealogical research methods and techniques.
