GIM examination practices tests the ability of a certified individual holding a GRS(C) designation to proving a working knowledge of genealogical principles. They know, understand and are able to work with genealogical records, manuscript, typescript or printed and are able to prepare abstracts of common documentation.

GIM examination practices tests the ability of a certified individual holding a CG(C) designation to proving in addition to the above the individual’s ability to analyze evidence, to evaluate and if necessary to verify information from secondary sources, to solve problems and to prepare an adequate family history to accepted publication format. He or she knows thoroughly the bibliography, historiography and terminology of his or her particular area of genealogical research.
